Since the release of Anna’s War on 2 July, 2025 there have been many reviews. Here are a few.

To be honest I am not a reader. But for the holidays my Mum insisted I read one book. Anna’s War had me hooked from the start. I became consumed in the story. I was so angry, worried, scared, sad and hopeful throughout Anna’s journey. One day later I had finished the book! I may become a reader after all. Cameron – aged 14.

I have just finished Anna’s war on my holiday I couldn’t put it down. I read it in three days. I was so glued to the book. I am not joking – it is the best book I have ever had my hands on I really do hope it ends up being a movie. Huntah – aged 13

Taylor’s carefully crafted prose perfectly captures the fear and uncertainty faced by civilians in occupied territories. With themes of loyalty, trust, and the over-arching love of family, the story gently exposes readers to the realities of war. Reviewed by Jenny Ruge. Read more at StoryLinks.

This is a terrific story, with a strong female lead character, and Anna and her family struggled through immense hardship. It contains themes of war, trust, determination, survival, the importance of family, and the importance of hope to get you through the toughest of situations that life can throw at you. The depiction of the war is realistic but never brutal, making this suitable for 12 to 15 year olds. Reviewed by Rob. Read more at Lamont Books.

The historical detail is extremely fine and used smarty to create an engaging story with true-to-life characters. I knew exactly how Anna, and all the characters felt – that is down to the remarkable talent and skill of the author. You will root for Anna as she navigates a treacherous year during World War II, with much trauma and heartache to come (but I won’t spoil anything here) an always, happy moments and light at the end of the tunnel. Anna is a true heroine – and this book is extremely cinematic. It would make a wonderful miniseries or film. If you have a penchant for historical fiction, and ripper reads that will latch onto your heart and make a difference, or you just want to bask in an exquisitely written story then Anna’s War by DJ Taylor published by Riveted Press is for you. Creating a narrative based on her in-laws’ memories along with a friend of theirs, DJ Taylor has provided us with a brilliant new read-around-your-topic title for older students. But it is equally suitable for your older primary students who are interested in this historical period. It will certainly give them plenty to think about and, as a serial read-aloud, would jumpstart plenty of class discussions and inquiries. Reviewed by Sue Warren. Read more at Just So Stories blog.

It is one of the best World War II novels I have read in a long time and I absolutely recommend it as a high school text. I was gripped from the beginning to the end, just waiting to find out if Anna’s trust was misplaced or not. Not only is it thoroughly researched but it is beautifully and sensitively written. It’s a fantastic debut novel and I really hope to see more of DJ Taylor in the future. Podcast: Middle Grade Mavens, Episode 126 – Pamela Ueckweman. Listen here.

A MUST read for everyone. It was only released on 2 July and I have already read it twice. It’s a debut novel for Dianne and I’m hoping it’s the first of many more to come. Wonderful, wonderful book. I’ve bought 4 copies as gifts. Alison – Crazy Book Lady, Facebook

This is an unputdownable story of secrets, courage and danger set in German-occupied southern Holland during WWII. Anna’s family is hiding her father from the Nazis – but a young German translator has discovered their secret. Anna believes he can be trusted but will her trust end in betrayal? This story is based on true events – it’s meticulously researched, and beautifully written. Perfect for 12+ readers and lovers of historical fiction. Sandy Bigna (Author of Little Bones), Aussie Kids Books

Anna’s War is a gripping tension-filled and realistic depiction of wartime life. It cleverly shows the resilience, forbidden connection, family loyalties and the bravery of a young girl thrust into the dark shadows of war. Di Bates, Editor, Buzz Words Magazine

Five Stars – no question. I’ve just finished this wonderfully written story by DJ Taylor. Goodreads Reviews:

How lucky to receive a preview copy of this book to read. I finished it in two sittings – and remained on edge, gripped, emotionally-invested, and absolutely floored the entire time.

Anna’s War — perfect for pre-teens, teens, and young 44-year-olds!

The suspense builds well and I hope DJ Taylor is writing book 2, to continue Anna’s story.

This book is so engaging that I read it in a week-end. The characters are well developed, and the story has enough tension to keep you reading – but not keep you up at night!
